Loran-C pulse

Loran-C is a low frequency hyperbolic radionavigation and time reference system which provide a precise regional position service. The system uses stable 100KHz groundwave transmissions . Loran-C in Europe was implemented and founded by U.S. Coast Guard. In January 1995 the system was transferred to the host nations.
Jan Mayen Loran-C transmits pulses in two navigation-chains. (Se Loran-C coverage map below) The transmitter generate 8 pulses every 0.07 sec in the first chain, and 8 pulses every 0.09 sec in the second chain. Transmissions from all Loran-C stations are syncronized and all stations uses cesium time reference to obtain high timing accuracy. The time difference between received signals make Loran-C recivers able to calculate accurate position


Loran-C transmissions are also used for sending satellite positioning differential corrections (D.GPS) and several other services to users over a wide area. Eurofix provide excellent D.GPS data (often near 1 meter accuracy).
